APPreciation: Evernote

The middle of the semester is no time to leave your personal or academic life in disorganized shambles.

The Evernote application, available for Androids, iPhones, tablets and computers alike, is the antithesis of disorganization. It has the benefits of every organizational tool you’ve ever used — manila filing folders, binders, sticky notes and photo albums — without any of the hassle of actually carrying around such bulky objects.

With Evernote, users have the ability to create “notes” that encompass any type of file one would need to store: text files, photo files and even audio clippings. Then, it allows the user to organize them based on a variety of different elements, including the location where the file was created – labeled with tags to associate them with one another – or placed in larger virtual notebooks.

The brilliance of the app lies not only in its ability to organize information in an effective way for users to keep track of everything, but in its ability to do this in a way that looks clean and cool.

Evernote is nice to look at and easy to use. The mobile app design is starkly simple — just a few green tabs on the main screen, loosely based on the appearance of folders in a filing cabinet. A few buttons at the top of the screen give users the option to make new notes or take new photos.

The simplicity is a great choice for two reasons. The first is that this is an organizational tool, and overdoing the design would be inappropriate and take away from the app’s function. The second is that simple designs, for organizational apps or otherwise, are very chic and hip right now.

Evernote makes it possible to keep your life in order, and does so in a way that isn’t too hard on the eyes. Make it a downloading priority somewhere between midterms and finals.
