Syracuse names 4 captains for 2013 season
Syracuse linebacker Marquis Spruill, running back Jerome Smith, center Macky MacPherson and defensive tackle Jay Bromley have been named captains for the 2013 season. The captains were decided by a team vote.
“I’m real proud of those guys,” head coach Scott Shafer said. “They’ve done a nice job from the first time that we got to work together in the winter time until today. I’m real pleased with those guys.”
Shafer said that the coaches also voted, and elected the same four players. Even had the two votes not been the same, though, Shafer would have gone with the players’ votes.
Spruill has started for Syracuse since he was a true freshman. His 26.5 career tackles for a loss are 10th on the Orange’s all-time list. He earned second-team All-Big East honors as a sophomore in 2011. Spruill was arrested in December and charged with disorderly combat and harassment, but it was an isolated incident, and the linebacker came within 10 or 11 votes of being a unanimous selection as captain, Shafer said.
Smith rushed for 1,171 yards last season, giving Syracuse a 1,000-yard rusher for the third straight season. He will likely again split carries with Prince-Tyson Gulley as the running backs will be asked to carry the load with a first-year starting quarterback, whether it be Drew Allen or Terrel Hunt.
MacPherson, the grandson of former SU head coach Dick MacPherson, is on the Rimington Trophy watch list, which is awarded to the nation’s best center. He’s blocked for a 1,000-yard rusher in each of the past two seasons and represented the Orange at the Atlantic Coast Conference Football Kickoff in Greensboro, N.C., in July.
Bromley, who anchors the defensive line, was Syracuse’s other representative at the ACC Kickoff. The defensive tackle is a two-year starter and has logged 79 tackles in his career.
