Former Syracuse guard Brandon Triche signed with a professional team in Italy on Tuesday.

Triche, who was not selected in the 2013 NBA Draft, will play for Trento of Italy’s LegaDue this season with the goal of spring-boarding to the NBA next year.

Triche had been waiting for an offer from the Charlotte Bobcats, whom he played for in the Las Vegas Summer League in July, his father Melvin said, but as European rosters began to fill up, Triche decided it was best not to wait and take that chance.

So he signed a one-year deal that includes a two-bedroom apartment, a car and extra travel expenses.

“Brandon was on a timeline,” the elder Triche said. “Taking a chance on Charlotte or another (NBA) team or take a serious deal.”

Triche chose Trento over other European teams, the NBA Developmental League and a chance to catch on with an NBA team via training camp.

Italian scouts first noticed Triche in Las Vegas, where he averaged 7.4 points and 1.4 assists in 12.6 minutes per game. Scouts told the elder Triche they were impressed with Triche’s point-guard ability and willingness to push the pace.

Melvin Triche said the family had hoped the Bobcats would extend an offer, but after seeing another former SU player, Andy Rautins, get stuck in the D-League last year after signing a non-guaranteed contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Triche decided continuing to wait was not his best option.

“We did not want a team to get him in camp and stick him in the D-League like what Andy went through last year,” the elder Triche said.

Triche felt Trento was his most competitive choice, and also the most beneficial to his future, Melvin and Brandon’s brother Mike Triche said.

“Option No. 1 is to use this year to grow and mature as an athlete and a player,” Mike Triche said, “and then going forward, have a long NBA career.”

Melvin and Mike Triche could not confirm The Post-Standard’s report that Brandon’s contract was worth $95,000.

Brandon Triche, a Jamesville-DeWitt graduate, averaged 13.6 points per game as a senior for the Orange last season, second only behind C.J. Fair.
