Reddish, Welsh miss 2nd half with lower-body injuries

Cornerback Brandon Reddish and defensive end Robert Welsh suffered lower-body injuries and missed the second half of Syracuse’s 52-17 win over Tulane on Saturday.

Head coach Scott Shafer said he didn’t have an update on the two injured players after the game, but that he expects to soon.

“We’re going to find out pretty soon,” Shafer said, “get them the full battery of tests.”

Welsh injured his left leg making a tackle on Green Wave quarterback Nick Montana in the second quarter of the blowout. He had to be helped off the field and didn’t put any weight on his left leg.

Welsh, who starts opposite Micah Robinson, finished with just the one solo tackle. Ron Thompson and Isaiah Johnson got expanded minutes in the second half with the starter injured.

Reddish, who is part of the Orange’s three-man cornerback rotation with Keon Lyn and Ri’Shard Anderson, was replaced by Julian Whigham. The cornerback Whigham hauled in his first career interception and recorded two tackles. Reddish broke up one pass before leaving the game.

SU now has two weeks off before it next takes the field in the Carrier Dome against No. 3 Clemson.

“The good news is we have some time,” Shafer said. “The bad news is they didn’t play the second half, so we’ll see.”
