How to travel by bus in the Syracuse University area

Brandon Bielinski | Contributing Photographer

Some bus stops will change locations because of the University Place Promenade.

For most freshmen at Syracuse University, traveling by bus is the cheapest and most convenient form of transportation. Here is a guide to help freshmen navigate to Destiny USA, Armory Square and other popular student destinations.

Basic information about the bus systems

The Central New York Regional Transportation Authority (Centro) serves Onondaga, Oswego, Cayuga and Oneida counties. It has more than 30 routes in Syracuse and five routes for SU. Most fare prices are $2 for students, although there are free-fare zones for students.

The Connective Corridor, which is free for students, is part of the Centro system but runs specifically through SU-related destinations.

The SU Shuttle Service, also free for students, is operated by Birnie Bus, and runs through Main and South campuses.

University Place promenade causes changes to the bus system

The University Place promenade is a new pedestrian walkway running along University Place on the SU campus. The promenade is part of the Campus Framework, a roadmap for SU’s physical campus construction renovations over the next 20 years. The Campus Framework is one of three parts of Chancellor Kent Syverud’s Fast Forward Syracuse initiative.

All of the Centro bus stops originally located on University Place will be rebuilt on Comstock and Waverly Avenues, or rerouted to College Place. These four new bus stops are located on Waverly Avenue and Comstock Avenue; between Walnut Place and Walnut Avenue on Waverly Avenue; and on both sides of Comstock Avenue and University Place.

This guide includes updated information for all routes listed.
