A Syracuse University student was arrested after he allegedly threw a cat against a wall repeatedly, causing it serious injuries but not death, the Syracuse Police Department said Monday.

SU’s Department of Public Safety began an investigation into the incident in August 2018 after a 20-year-old woman reported that her ex-boyfriend repeatedly punched and kicked her during a domestic dispute in October 2017, SPD said. The incident was not reported until August.

During the DPS investigation, SPD said it learned the student had also caused serious injuries to the victim’s cat by repeatedly throwing it against a wall. The cat was treated at a local animal hospital and Cornell University for a fractured skull, pelvis and femur, but it did not die, SPD said. The veterinary treatment cost the woman $3,000, SPD said.

Dancheng Wang, a 21-year-old in the College of Arts and Sciences, was arrested on the charges of aggravated animal cruelty, criminal mischief in the second degree and harassment in the second degree.
