The second Cornell University student to display symptoms of the new coronavirus has tested negative for the disease, Cornell officials announced Sunday.

The student was placed in isolation last week and underwent testing from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As of Sunday, no student at Cornell is being tested for the novel coronavirus, the university said in a press release.

Cornell announced Monday that the CDC was testing another student who exhibited symptoms of the virus. The student’s test results also came back negative.

The novel coronavirus, a respiratory disease, spreads through saliva and causes flu-like symptoms such as fever, coughing and shortness of breath. Health officials believe the disease originated in Wuhan City, China.

Syracuse University is located about 50 miles away from Cornell. There have been no confirmed cases of coronavirus in New York state or potential cases reported near SU’s campus.

SU announced a temporary travel restriction to China on Jan. 31 in response to the outbreak of the virus, which the World Health Organization called a global health emergency. Anyone who travels to China will not be allowed in university buildings or facilities for 14 days after returning to the U.S.

The university will follow guidance from the U.S. State Department and CDC to remove the travel restriction “as soon as it is deemed safe to do so,” officials said.
