Syracuse University’s chapter of the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity is now permitted to operate on campus as a recognized chapter, said Sarah Scalese, SU’s senior associate vice president for university communications.

The fraternity was suspended in July 2020 for violating public health orders and the Code of Student Conduct. The suspension came after two graduating fraternity members allegedly allowed 20 to 30 people to gather on April 23 while the fraternity’s house was closed due to the pandemic, said Melissa Kish, the chief operating officer of ZBT’s national organization at the time.

ZBT applied to return to campus at the end of their suspension period and were reinstated effective spring 2022, Scalese said in a statement to The Daily Orange on Thursday.

The university put ZBT on disciplinary probation in 2018 after SU investigated behavior that included ZBT members spitting into potential members’ mouths. The fraternity was placed under disciplinary and social probation again in January 2020, though the misconduct leading to the probation is unclear.
