Syracuse draw control specialist Kate Mashewske was named IWLCA Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday. The recognition comes after Mashewske posted a program record 20 draw controls in SU’s NCAA Tournament second-round win over Stony Brook Sunday. Mashewske shared the honor with Michigan’s Erin O’Grady.

Against the Seawolves, Mashewske was close to automatic, leading the Orange to a 22-of-29 advantage in the circle. Mashewske’s total of 20 surpassed her total of 19 against Louisville in 2022 and Kayla Treanor’s 19 versus Loyola in 2016.

Mashewske recorded 15 in the first half, setting a new program record for most in an entire NCAA Tournament game. She chalked up five more in the final 30 minutes, leading Syracuse to a 15-10 win. In her fifth season with the Orange, Mashewske has tallied 205 draw controls through 20 games.

With the honor, Mashewske joins Hallie Simkins and Olivia Adamson as SU players to win the award in 2024.
