A “record number” of 14 Syracuse University students and alumni have been selected for the 2024 Fulbright U.S. Student Program, according to a Friday SU News release.

This cohort of recipients is the largest the university has had in any given year, according to the release. Last year, 10 SU students and alumni were announced as Fulbright recipients.

Five more SU students and alumni were named Fulbright alternates, the release said. Alternates are eligible to be promoted to the “finalist status” if additional funding becomes available, according to the program’s website.

The Fulbright Program is a United States government-sponsored program which funds scholarships for U.S. citizens to research, teach, study or volunteer in one of more than 140 participating countries.

In a Feb. 13 news release, the university announced that the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs named SU a “Fulbright Top Producing Institution” for the second consecutive year.

The 2024 Fulbright SU awardees are:

• Caroline Barraco, a 2024 master’s graduate of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, who will be completing an English Teaching Assistantship in Spain.
• Olivia Budelmann, a 2023 graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences, who will be completing an ETA in Andorra.
• Jaemon Crosby, a 2024 graduate of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, who will be studying at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in the United Kingdom.
• Avital Datskovsky, a Ph.D. student in Maxwell, who will be researching in India.
• Jessica Hogbin, a Ph.D. student in Maxwell, who will be researching in Italy.
• Lindsey Kernen, a 2024 graduate of Arts and Sciences and Maxwell, who will be studying at the University of Strathclyde in the U.K.
• Yasmin Nayrouz, a 2024 graduate of Arts and Sciences and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, who will be studying at the University of Sussex in the U.K.
• Anthony Ornelaz, a 2024 master’s graduate in Arts and Sciences, who will be completing an ETA in Poland.
• Alec Rovensky, a 2021 graduate of the School of Architecture, who will study at the Technische Universität Berlin in Germany.
• Adriana Rozas Rivera, a 2021 graduate of Newhouse, who will be completing an ETA in Spain.
• Zelikha Shoja, a 2024 graduate of VPA, who will be researching in Tajikistan.
• Julianne Strauss, a 2023 graduate of the School of Education and 2024 graduate of one of its master’s programs, who will be completing an ETA in Spain.
• Elizabeth Vanek, a 2024 graduate of the School of Education, who will be completing an ETA in Mexico.
• Ciara Young, a 2024 graduate of Maxwell and Arts and Sciences, who will be completing an ETA in South Korea.

The 2024 Fulbright SU alternates are:

• Huleymatu Barrie, a 2022 graduate of Maxwell and Arts and Sciences, who is an alternate for an ETA in Ghana.
• Ian Ferguson, a Ph.D. student in Maxwell, who is an alternate for a research award in Kenya.
• Liam Goff, a Newhouse student, who is an alternate for an ETA in Germany.
• Mary Matthews, a Maxwell student, who is an alternate for an ETA in Estonia.
• Laura Roman Lopez, a 2024 master’s graduate of Newhouse, who is an alternate for an ETA in Argentina.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this article listed Olivia Budelmann as a 2023 graduate of both Arts and Sciences and the Martin J. Whitman School of Management. This was incorrect. Budelmann was not a Whitman student. The Daily Orange regrets this error.
