SU alumnus, Chicago Cubs owner donates $1 million to Falk program

Andrew Berlin, part owner of the Chicago Cubs, donated $1 million to SU’s sport management department, creating a scholarship program, an annual symposium and an academy for high school students.
Syracuse University alumnus Andrew Berlin, part owner of the Chicago Cubs, has donated $1 million to the university to support scholarships and financial assistance for sport analytics majors.
The gift to the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics’ sport analytics program will also provide funding for faculty research, sport analytical competitions, a mentorship program and several other initiatives, SU announced in a news release on Thursday. Falk introduced its sport analytics program in 2016.
Berlin graduated from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs in 1983 with a political science degree. He serves on SU’s Board of Trustees and is chairman and CEO of Berlin Packaging, a global supplier of glass, plastic and metal containers and closures.
Berlin Scholars, as the scholarship recipients will be known, will be selected based on academic proficiency, research skills and engagement, according to the release. Another group of upper-level students, called Berlin Senior Research Associates, will mentor younger classmates and assist with faculty research.
The Berlin Sport Analytics Academy, still in the planning stage, will be introduced as a program for high school students interested in a sport analytics. It will host guest speakers, a lecture series and activities for students.
Berlin’s gift also establishes an annual symposium, which will be hosted across the country. The symposium will feature innovators in the field of sport analytics. The first symposium will occur in Chicago, with a panel of industry executives and professors from Falk’s sport analytics program.
